House of Sweeping Shadows | Abin Design Studio

Kolkata based architect Abin Chaudhuri infuses new life into an existing structure, showcasing his interpretation of ‘adaptive reuse.’ Using steel, a new facade and other elements are woven on to the original concrete shell, allowing natural light to create dramatic shadows that dance across the floor and walls inside.

The striations in this screen (which are inspired from traditional Bengali homes) is what facilitates natural cooling, while the large rectangular perforations connect the building to the rural landscape surrounding it. Within a few years, Abin foresees the screen covered in creepers, completely changing the character of the home, tethering it even more firmly to the landscape beyond.
