This year’s architecture biennale was even more special owing to the involvement of the Vatican who commissioned a series of chapels. The brief to each of the ten architects was to create places of shelter designed for orientation, encounter, mediation and salutation - free from the attachments of specific religions or religious sites.

The result was an exceptional showcase of multi-faceted structures that displayed incredible imagination.

The Venice Biennale, an international architecture exhibition, is a showcase of work by leading architects and designers from across the world. 

It is a platform where invited architects express their creativity and share ideas around a provocation or theme. With a different theme announced for each Biennale, the exhibition this year revolves around the theme ‘Free Space’. The word describes a generosity of spirit and a sense of humanity which is at the core of the work on display.

The Biennale Architettura 2018 is a public event where examples, proposals and elements of work that exemplify essential qualities of architecture, revealing their power and beauty are showcased to visitors. The 16th International Architecture Exhibition, runs from May 26th to November 25th 2018 in different venues in Venice.
