This Arabian Sea-facing penthouse in Prabhadevi, Mumbai, exudes elegance from every pore. Space Dynamix has employed a careful mix of glass, stainless steel, and customised furniture in this remarkable home.
This sea-facing triplex at Prabhadevi has been designed by Mumbai-based Space Dynamix with a muted aesthetic of beige and browns, oozing an understated elegance and reflecting the personalities of the residents.
A major structural rework was necessary before starting the work as the original structure had been haphazardly constructed and needed to be re-ramped completely.
The living plus dining, kitchen, and study areas reside on the first level; 2 master bedrooms are located on the first floor; and a home-theatre with an attached terrace complete the second floor. The layout is planned to get views of the Arabian Sea from all rooms, also providing ample natural light and cross-ventilation for all spaces.
The main living area has a unique seating arrangement, where a lounger has been placed with its back to the main seating arrangement so that one can relax on this while enjoying the sea-view.
Another unique corner has been created beside this with the help of a Victoria high-chair of a brilliant magenta hue set on a lush carpet and made to stand against a framed artwork.
A light veneered ceiling with LED light strips leads one towards the staircase which connects the multiple levels.
A bamboo planter forms a multi-functional partition between the staircase and the living area by also acting as an occasional seating ledge. A rough wooden log completes the seating arrangement. The plain muted walls form a backdrop for artwork from the owner’s art collection.
The opposite wall is panelled in dark veneer to offset the muted beige marble floor as well as the beige furnishings.
The dining table is set against a column which has been converted into a feature marble frame. The table is overlooked by a chandelier made of glass bubbles which seem to float in thin air, creating a dramatic effect.
The kitchen is slick and modern, and has been finished in stainless steel and veneer. The central island counter is decked in white corian while the running counters are made of granite. A back painted glass panel forms a colourful dado above one of the counters.
The custom-designed staircase is a unique feature. The profiles of stringers have been cut in a single 12 mm-thick stainless steel plate and then joined together with metal strips, forming the base for the granite treads. The risers are kept open. This gives a feeling of lightness to the staircase mass, also allowing glimpses of the sea as one walks up. The side walls are finished in stucco-type texture which creates an interesting play of shadows as light streams in from the adjoining glazing.
The master bedroom covers the full width of the residence, with a large terrace facing the sea. Full height, wall–to–wall windows enable unrestricted access to the amazing sea view. The room has separate sleeping and seating areas with 2 loungers facing the sea view. A glass partition between the bathroom and bedrooms contains the two within one homogenous space. The TV has been mounted in front of this glass partition on steel pipes which neatly hide all the cables.
The daughter’s bedroom has an open bathtub separated from the sleeping area by a semi–transparent glass partition, giving a trendy, boutique feel to the space. A slate clad wall forms a striking backdrop for the bed as well as the tub, which is embedded in a white corian platform. A hanging side-lamp and wall washer accentuate this feature.
The residence speaks a sophisticated design language, reflecting the personalities of the owners, while also doing full justice to the glorious views outside.
