When Sanjeev Shanmugam approached Sanctuary to redesign his home within an existing structure, the challenge was daunting. The existing building consisting of three separate apartment units had to be converted into a single home for Sanjeev, his wife and infant son. Apart from its location (in a central posh cul-de-sac), nothing about the structure even remotely complemented the lifestyle Sanjeev leads. The structural challenge of working within the existing grid structure saw Anshul deftly explode slabs, introduce double height and triple volumes and create punctures and recesses in the front elevation to create a space within that are flooded with natural light, interesting volume and luxury. In terms of material, a blending fusion was created to give a contemporary, cross-cultural feel. White walls and dark wood bring in the touch of Zen, and marble and slate alternate to give texture and richness.
