A weekend house in Raigad, Maharashtra by Matharoo Associates prompts one to shed all urban baggage and immerse oneself into the lap of nature. Principal architect Gurjit Matharoo was inspired by marooned ships and forgotten fortresses for this outhouse meant for family and friends to unwind from the drudgery of city life.
The curved front facade and the gentle slope from one end to the other gives the impression of a ship that steered away from its course and found itself blissfully settled amidst towering palms, with just the view of the sea serving as a reminder of its starting point. At the same time, the massive rough Basalt stone walls are reminiscent of the bastions of past eras and award the house with a likeness of the long-standing forts that dot the coastline in these parts. The interiors are minimalist providing an ideal canvas for the ever evolving play of light throughout the day.
