A Bhuj farm house has been designed dexterously combining the principles of traditional housing and contemporary lifestyle.

Aayam architects, headed by Hiten Kakakdiya, have created a marvellous combination of traditional building techniques and materials and contemporary lifestyle in the design of a 7500 sq. ft. farm house in Bhuj.

Climatic conditions have played an important role in turning the design of the house. The different spaces are distributed carefully around the central courtyard. The courtyard houses a granite stone fountain and a small pool within. The south of the building has been built high, shielding the courtyard from the harsh sun.

The six planters lined along the entrance walk way, depict the ‘tulsi-chaura’ put at the front of a traditional Indian house. A carved antique door from Chennai was sourced for the main entrance and small jali on each side compose the ethnicity of it. The bold blue hue of the wall standing out among the neutral shades complements the art works dotted around it.

Another remarkable feature is the hand-cast dogra jali, 300 individual pieces, of which no two are alike giving the dining area a cool. The master bedroom has green hue as an accent within the neutral shades of beige. The bathrooms have skylight to let in natural light and coloured glass recovered from old buildings has been used for windows, casting a tinted glow.

A cyclone can lift off the roof, so the wood was interconnected, by fixing it to inclined members as well as the wall, to anchor it. The foundation is of stone and sand without the use of cement, to make it stronger and safer during an earthquake.
