Surrounded by the picturesque Deccan plateau, the site for the printing press and office building of Lokmat newspaper in Pune lay nestled between two hills. Besides adding character to the overall structure, Kapil and Jayashree Bhalla’s thematic design reinforced the individuality of each part, highlighted the symbolism and created an interconnection between the building and its landscape. The Lokmat building has two prominent characters - the two brick pinnacles. Each houses an important functional area as well as represents the ‘strength and responsibility of media’. The first brick block holds the administrative area and the corporate office. The industrial unit of the building, holding the printing press, is intelligently designed to meet the demands of an increasing production and is also sustainable. This unit boasts of expansive height with mechanical ventilation that helps in controlling energy costs. The basic approach of this project is to make it an environmentally sustainable one. This project by Studio for Environment and Architecture (Se-arch) symbolises the tale of drama and design.
