The Bar Stock Exchange in Kamala Mills, Mumbai, has an earthy tone, despite having an edgy, industrial feel.

The Bar Stock Exchange in Mumbai was created with the sole purpose of being the ultimate getaway from the busy surroundings of the corporate facade, that is Kamala Mills. It was conceived as the flagship outlet of the brand, covering almost 4,000 sq ft. The client wished the space to have an industrial look and feel, the style followed across all the outlets of the brand.

The concept was to create a green industrial haven amidst the busy corporate park. This project attempts to amalgamate a warehouse look with the design inspiration of a greenhouse. A lot of vertically distributed greens help to break away from the busy corporate vibe of Kamala Mills. The various planters enhance the greenhouse effect and create a vibrant space that is bustling with fresh energy.

The inspiration behind the The Orange Lane’s design was to display the building materials that many would try to conceal. The team added a raw, unfinished look to the space and selected pieces that are as much about function as they are about style. The industrial design was enhanced by using neutral tones, concrete tunnels, kavlu and exposed concrete walls, utilitarian objects, an open ceiling exposing the AC ducts and pipes, wood and metal surfaces and organic paintings. The roof was designed with a grid pattern of steel and glass, making way for as much natural light as possible, says Shabnam Gupta, the principal architect.

Pod seating in the ground level is an innovative feature. The space is huge with parts of it having a mezzanine floor. The blue and white herring bone pattern cement tiles tie the space together along with yellow pockets of bright upholstery. The cement fabricated tunnel seating is made from light weight tubes with metal jail infill, adding to the adventurous and edgy feel. The space depicts the passion and ideas that go into the design. The result was a “warehouse look” that combined a true industrial feel with a range of other styles, from earthy to polished.
