This south Indian restaurant in Vadodara, Gujarat, not only serves authentic food, but also offers a charming environment full of earthy tones and thematic upcycled accessories.

Milton’s South Corner is an authentic south Indian cuisine restaurant located in Vadodara, Gujarat.

The restaurant covers a carpet area of 1,500 sq. ft. and the team from city-based Studio Outline, led by founders and principal architects, Ruchita Mehta and Trupesh Purohit, completed the full design of the eatery within 40 days.

“The space used to be a Bajaj service station and we have retained the old Kota flooring in the restaurant, although after applying a mirror polish to it. We even included coconut shells - essentially garbage items at the eatery once the delicious coconut chatni has been prepared - in the design process,” states the team. “We used them for the table hanging-lights.”

The smart re-use and recycling doesn’t end there. The clients provided the designers with old but still lovely south Indian saris, made of pure-quality fabric no less, which they no longer were using. The team turned them into panelling screens between the kitchens and the seating area.

A huge hand-made wall painting and a column covered to look like a typically south Indian tree helps create a uniquely charming interior space where to break bread. Purohit, and Bhavu Bambhaniya, were in charge of planning and realising the artistic look and tenor of the restaurant. “We tried to create a great ambience by experimenting, a lot!” confirms the team.

Studio Outline has created a personal language of innovative, minimalist and timeless designs. Milton’s South Corner Restaurant is an example of that philosophy working wonders to solidly define the look and feel of a place.
